WorkSmart21 Continues Making Strides
Now in its 17th year, The Trust’s WorkSmart21 Program continues to help Members make strides to reduce workers’ compensation claims activity, and positively impact their safety culture. Members are required to participate in WorkSmart21 if their current Policy Year Experience Modifier is 1.25 or higher. For the current Policy Year, 16 Member entities are participating in the Program.
“We have found the Program to be very beneficial in that it has provided us with the opportunity to identify and focus on issues relating to employee safety that we may otherwise have not known existed or spent the time required to address,” said Katie Duncanson, Executive Director of Human Resources, Warwick Public Schools. She also noted that continuous monitoring, by way of monthly safety committee meetings, combined with the ongoing support of The Trust, has been instrumental in successfully implementing safety initiatives and strategies that are making a difference in reducing injuries.
While remedial in nature, the foundation of WorkSmart21 is built upon a collaborative approach to practical risk management techniques. “Participating Members learn how to effectively minimize injuries in the workplace through an internally facilitated, ongoing safety awareness program focused specifically on workplace safety and occupational health,” said Colleen Bodziony, Director of Operations and Member Services. Trust staff participates alongside an established Safety Committee for monthly meetings to review claims, target loss prevention efforts, and develop claims management strategies geared toward the specific types of losses the Member is experiencing.
WorkSmart21 Safety Committees also establish quarterly goals designed to address their specific areas of loss. For each quarter that a Member successfully completes their goals, they earn $500 from The Trust to be used to reward employees for working safely. For the 2016-2017 Policy Year, The Trust awarded a total of $9,000 in WorkSmart21 incentives to Members for meeting their goals.
